Marvel at the 'Michelangelo mystery' on a Tuscany holiday
However, the Florentine has reported of a mystery surrounding its real origin and villa holiday makers can see for themselves this summer.
Art expert Paola Barocchi, along with a number of renowned international authorities, claims that the work of art which was recently bought by the state for 3.5 million euros (£3.1 million) could be worth far less than that and was actually created by an unknown.
"It is obvious that the cross is a serial production; what we are looking at is a work that was carved by a talented, yet unknown artist from the late 1400s, who carved a series of crosses similar to this one in his workshop," Mr Barocchi says.
He adds that the art work could really be only worth 150,000 euros.
The Museum Bargello may represent an ideal day trip for anyone renting a villa in Tuscany as it is one of the oldest buildings in Florence - dating back to 1255 - and houses a whole host of masterpieces.
