Lucca summer festival, Tuscany
The summer festival, held at the beautiful Tuscan town of Lucca, is Italy's premier contemporary music event.
Kicking off last Sunday, the concerts, which continue throughout the month, are held at the town's spectacular Piazza Napoleone. Tickets start at 25.
The star-studded lineup for this year includes Dionne Warwick, George Michael and Joss Stone. Legendary rock group Steely Dan will close the festival on July 28th.
The festival has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 1998. Audiences and artists such as Ray Charles and Bob Dylan have enjoyed the concerts' wonderfully atmospheric setting. The Piazza is ringed by medieval walls, and surrounded by formal gardens and imposing Renaissance architecture.
Those visitors looking for something to do while waiting for their concert to start will be spoilt for choice: Lucca itself is regarded by those in the know as one of the region's hidden gems.
Only just over a mile across, the small town, surrounded by hills, contains several beautiful medieval churches, two art galleries and one of the nation's best preserved Roman amphitheatres.
