Festival of the Cricket on a Tuscany villa holiday
Held on May 24th, the celebration centres on the humble insect, believed to be both a harbinger of spring and a good luck charm.
Opposition from animal rights groups has seen a more ethical overhaul of festivities in recent years to include artificial crickets instead of live ones, which can be brought in cages from scores of market stalls lining the venue.
Other outlets sell food including a vast array of confectionary, while musical shows and local entertainment add to the festival buzz.
Those interested in the event's long and chequered history should pay a visit to the nearby mount of Cantagrilli, where the last dealers of real crickets would stock up before heading into the city.
The festival is a conveniently close diversion for tourists enjoying a villa holiday in the nearby town of Vinci, which holds one of the largest collections of inventions by famed artist and local son Leonardo da Vinci.
