Etruscan history: Tuscany

This week Italy has announced the return of some of the Getty artefacts from America.

A total of 40 will be returned after culture minister Francesco Rutelli announced the arrival of the first four works, according to the Guardian.

Italy claims the artefacts were looted and sold to foreign museums, but now the prized pieces will be coming home and distributed to museums across the country.

One of the artefacts being returned is an Etruscan terra-cotta statue from the 5th century BC, and fans of the art from this era will be delighted to here of its return to Italian shores.

Holidaymakers interested in Etruscan art would enjoy the rich cultural history of Volterra in Tuscany.

Visitors to the area can pay a trip to the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum to see the importance of Volterra during the Etruscan era.

Founded in 1761, the museum is very important to Etruscan history in the area, much of the collection was donated by Mario Guarnacci who also donated a library of more than 50,000 volumes.

This donation also made sure the Etruscan burial sights were kept intact and confirmed Volterra as a historically significant place, not to mention a fantastic place for tourists to further their interests into the Etruscan era.
