The research was conducted by the European commission (EC) and saw much of the Tuscan coast obtain a rating showing that its waters were compliant with guide values during the 2007 season, Britons booking a Tuscany holiday may be interested to read.

Overall, 95 per cent of coastal bathing areas across Europe were found to comply with mandatory standards set out by the EC. This figure was 92.9 per cent for coastal areas in Italy.

Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of Italian freshwater bathing areas - such as lakes and rivers - were found to be compliant.

Tuscany holiday destinations located close to the coast include Bibbona and Bolgheri in Livorno, as well as Santa Luce and Donaratico.
