Enjoy a day at the races on a Tuscany villa holiday
However, those imagining something on a par with Royal Ascot will be mildly surprised, as the Palio of Sienna is a horse race with a difference.
On July 2nd, a number of daring jockeys will be riding bareback on a treacherous circuit around the Piazza del Campo.
The horses will do three laps of the main square in a race that usually lasts no longer than 90 seconds, but is no less exciting for its short duration.
It is not unusual for jockeys to be thrown from their horses as they scramble to the finish line in the hope of being crowned champion.
Prior to the race itself, a colourful pageant is staged to entertain the crowds.
The event is free to watch, although spectators may wish to get there early in order to secure a good spot as the race attracts thousands of people every year.
Holiday makers who think the Palio sounds like fun could rent a Tuscany villa in the town of Radicofani, which is around 60 kilometres south east of Sienna.
It is overlooked by a hill-top castle which provides spectacular views over the valley if tourists attempt the 30-minute walk to the top.
