Discover the 'delights' of delving deep into Tuscany
Maria Arnold of the Independent says that north of San Gimignano holiday makers will find a slightly different Tuscany than can be seen around the Chianti region.
Here the hills are less manicured but are full of "vibrant sunflowers and corn, or ancient grey-green groves of olive trees".
Ms Arnold spent a whole day relaxing under the Tuscany sky and watching a "vast field of sunflowers turning their heads to follow the sun".
She says that when dusk descended and an owl swooped low over her head she knew it was time to "pour the first of several glasses of cold white vernaccia".
For holiday makers who wish to recreate a similar relaxing holiday, a villa in Volterra could be right down their alley as the city overlooks a vast expanse of Tuscany countryside and is a close neighbour of the city of San Gimignano.
