Crossbow match-up on a Tuscany holiday

Taking place on the last Sunday in May, the crossbowmen of Sansepolcro travel to Gubbio for the Palio della Balestra - a fusion of medieval traditions.

A crossbow contest holds most excitement for visitors and holiday makers alike and the men of Gubbio and Sansepolcro dress in appropriate costumes to take part in the historic festival.

Antique weapons catapult the arrows towards their targets and the event is a serious and captivating contest.

The match-up occurs twice a year and the men of Gubbio visit Sansepolcro on the second Sunday in September for round two.

Holiday makers will find plenty of other activities to entertain them on a Tuscany holiday such as long walks through the countryside, a swim in the villa pool or sampling the local cuisine from Italian restaurants.
