Cavalli's "idyllic" Tuscany villa

The Observer's Elizabeth Day visited Roberto Cavalli at his Tuscany villa, where he has been inspired to create his own red wine.

At the vineyard where the designer's wine - the Cavalli Selection - originates, Ms Day observes the "idyllic setting".

"The vineyards are bordered on all sides by dense poppy fields. In the distance, you can make out the silhouettes of horses grazing and the aquamarine of a swimming pool built into the edge of the mountainside," she notes.

Tourists may be tempted to try a taste of the high life with their own Tuscany villa, which may provide the ideal opportunity to indulge in the al fresco eating and wine tasting for which the region is famous.

Cavalli recently told CNN that Florence, which lies just 15 minutes from his Tuscany villa, has been a key inspiration to his career.
