Anniversary couple get Tuscany holiday advice

Patricia Tilley from Surrey asked Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green how she and her partner could build an affordable Tuscany holiday around the Palio, Siena's horse racing festival.

The Palio takes place twice a year - on July 2nd and August 16th - and has been held in the Tuscan town since medieval times.

"It's an incredible spectacle and full of colour and quirk, not least in the fact that a horse can still win the three-lap race even if it crosses the finish line rider less," observes Mr Green in the publication.

He advised the pair that they could stand in the Piazza for free if they arrived before 16:00 local time and were happy with a raucous atmosphere and the hot Italian sun.

Travellers hoping to catch the Palio this summer may wish to book a Tuscany villa in Colle Val d'Elsa, a hilltop town that looks over the Elsa valley.
