Calcio Fiorentino is a festival that celebrates the early form of football and is sure to drag visitors away from the family villas in Tuscany.
Taking place in June, the event originated in the 16th century and it takes place at the Croce of Florence.
Originally it was played in teams of 27 with both sides using feet and hands and the pitch being a giant sandpit.
During the festival, three matches are played in the square each June and travellers can watch the players, dressed in medieval costumes, as they play the game.
Calcio Fiorentino is an example of one of the exciting cultural events and festivals that occur in Florence and Tuscany.
Holiday makers can also attend many festivals devoted to food with mushrooms, chocolate and artichokes all celebrated.
