'Try before you buy' at a Tuscan market
People on a villa holiday in Tuscany may wish to sample a selection of the region's cheeses at a local market before they decide which one to take home with them, a website has suggested.
Corsavoo.com stated that in Tuscany, many cheese vendors will offer a sample of their product - including pecorino cheese, which is made of sheep's milk and considered to be an Italian delicacy - to customers who ask in order to help them make the best decision.
According to gourmetsleuth.com, while pecorino is the name for all Italian cheeses produced with sheep's milk, the cheese differs from region to region.
While Pecorino Romano, from Rome, is larger than other cheeses and has a robust salty and fruity flavour, Pecorino Siciliano, which is from Sicily, is a more traditional creamery cheese made between the months of November and June.
Villa holiday makers may also be interested in purchasing a panino filled with slices of porchetta - a crusty bread roll filled with pork seasoned with herbs and salt - to snack on while they browse through the market stalls for pizza bread, focaccia and a selection of speciality cookies.
