Turkey holidays 'to be popular with Brits this year'

British travellers are set to show strong interest in Turkey holidays over the coming year, it has been predicted.

International Currency Exchange (Ice) described the country as a "gateway to the east" that offers a rich "melting pot of cultures" for foreign visitors to experience.

The company's currency sales figures suggest that Turkey holidays will once again prove popular this year among Brits eager to experience its unique appeal.

Koko Sarkari, global head of Ice, said: "The Turkish lira was the sixth most ordered currency in both May and June 2009 and in the summer of 2008 Turkey knocked Spain off the top spot for UK holidays.

"We are already seeing sales of lira up in January 2010, compared to the same time last year, suggesting that Turkey is a hot favourite with UK travellers."

One destination expected to prove popular this year is the city of Istanbul, which was recently announced as the European Capital of Culture for 2010.

Visitors can explore the city's bustling bazaars or go for a river cruise on the Bosphorus.
