Turkey holidays proving popular this year
Turkey holidays have proved a highly popular option so far this year, according to figures released by the country's national tourism agency.
The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism revealed that eight million visitors arrived in the country in the first five months of 2010 - ten per cent more than during the same period last year.
Some 26 million travellers visited the destination throughout 2009 and this figure is expected to increase this year.
Britain is a highly important market for the country, with 2.43 million people from the UK taking Turkey holidays in 2009, behind only Germany and Russia.
The tourism agency announced the figures ahead of the Istancool cultural festival, which will take place in Istanbul from July 2nd to 4th and feature a diverse line-up of high-profile visitors.
Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Frears, model Lily Cole and author VS Naipaul will all be taking part in the event.
People planning Turkey villa holidays this summer can choose to stay in a number of idyllic destinations along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, such as Dalyan, Ortakent and Konacik.
