Turkey holidays 'more than just good value'

With the pound still weak against the euro, Turkey, with its lira, is proving to be a popular destination among British holiday makers this year.

But the country offers much more than just good value for money, according to travel journalist Mike Watson.

In an article for the Press and Journal, he said Turkey holidays in Kalkan are particularly memorable and are a favourite for many UK families.

The former fishing village is home to numerous shops and restaurants, many of which are situated near the old port and have their own roof terraces.

He said Kalkan has a small pebbly beach and is just a few miles from the nine-mile stretch of powder white sand at Patara.

Here, holiday makers can explore old ruins and see the area where rare loggerhead turtles nest every year.

From Kalkan, a number of day trips and excursions are also available, Mr Watson pointed out, including a visit to a Turkish delight factory.

He also recommended a trip to the resort of Fethiye, which is home to a large marina and a beach nearby at Oludeniz.

Families can rent their own Turkey villas in Kalkan, where they can take boat rides out to the sandy bays of Patara and Kapatus.
