Turkey holidays a popular choice
The recession did not stop British families from jetting off abroad this summer, and Turkey holidays proved a popular choice.
According to the latest American Express Global Foreign Exchange Services Currency Index, people were simply not prepared to forgo their annual getaway.
It revealed that currency sales between July and September were on par with previous years, even though consumers have been struggling financially.
"Undoubtedly the much published no-show barbeque summer also helped fuel the trend in last minute bookings and currency sales towards the end of the season," said American Express spokesman Terry Perrin.
He explained that Turkey was one of the most travelled to destinations this year, with sales of the Turkish lire up 26 per cent compared to 2008.
Its beautiful beaches and sunny weather were obviously a major lure, but tourists may also have been drawn to Turkey holidays because of the attractive exchange rate.
Those thinking ahead to next year's break could consider renting their own villas in Turkey to see what the country has to offer.
The village of Torba could be a great place for holiday makers to stay, as it is home to some lovely pebble and sandy beaches and is close to the famed Temple of Apollo, which can be reached by ferry.
