Rent a Turkey villa and explore Xanthos
Those with a keen interest in the ancient world may wish to take a Turkey villa holiday on the Mediterranean coast where they will be close to the site of Xanthos.
The ancient Lycian site is world-renowned thanks to exhibitions that took place in the British Museum in the 19th century during which time sculptures and ornate tombs were shown off.
According to Today's Zaman, the famous exhibition was organised by British traveller and explorer Charles Fellowes, who spent time in the mountainous region during 1838.
At the time, the site of Lycia was a little-known part of the Ottoman empire that was considered so remote by Fellowes that he wrote in his journal that it had "not before been traversed by any European" upon his arrival, according to the news provider.
However, it is one of Turkey's most popular sites today, promising to provide an insightful look at the past civilisations who once resided in the area.
Of Xanthos itself, the newspaper reports that Fellowes wrote: "Ruins are wholly of temples, tombs, triumphal arches, walls, and a theatre.
"The site is extremely romantic, upon beautiful hills; some crowned with rocks, others rising perpendicularly from the river."
History buffs may also wish to visit the archaeological site of Kaunos, near Dalyan, which boasts an acropolis and a theatre that is more than 2,000 years old and still in use today.
