Interest in Turkey holidays 'to last beyond summer'

The growing interest in Turkey holidays is set to continue beyond the summer season, according to the country's official tourism agency.

Irfan Onal, director of the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office in the UK, pointed out that the destination is becoming increasingly popular among winter sports travellers.

He also commented on locations that are expected to attract interest from people planning Turkey holidays over the summer, identifying Bodrum, Marmaris, Oludeniz, Antalya and Dalaman as the main hotspots.

"The lesser-known destinations such as the Black Sea coast are increasingly attracting the curious, while Cappadocia is as popular as ever," Mr Onal added.

He was commenting after the Turkish Directorate General of State Airports Authority released figures showing that the country's airports handled more than 44 million passengers in the first half of 2010, 24 per cent more than last year.

Traffic increased at several locations that are popular among people taking Turkey villa holidays, including Antalya, Dalaman and Bodrum.

Istanbul Ataturk airport accounted for 33 per cent of all air and passenger traffic in the first six months of the year.
