Holidays to Turkey in 2013 'to be boosted by Mediterranean Games'
Those who regularly book up some Turkey villas for their summer getaways may be interested to hear that one of the country's southern provinces has been selected to host the 2013 Mediterranean Games.
Mersin was chosen to present the sporting event in an online poll yesterday (February 23rd), after the original hosting cities of Larissa and Volos in Greece were stripped of the rights.
The reason for this was due to the failure for the country to "conform to its organisational commitments", according to Today's Zaman.
Holding the next Mediterranean Games in Mersin means that it is the second time that the country has received the honour, following Smyrna hosting the competition back in 1971.
Togay Bayatl?, the head of the Turkish National Olympic Committee, commented: "Turkey has done great jobs in hosting sports events recently. The fact that Mersin got more than 50 per cent of the votes in the first round is a great example of Turkey's rising reputation."
The 2013 Mediterranean Games will be the 17th such event, which takes in 26 branches of sporting activities and welcomes an estimated 3,500 athletes.
