Holidays in Turkey 'are increasingly popular'

There has been a surge in the number of people enjoying a holiday in Turkey in recent years and the trend has continued through the first seven months of 2010.

Figures from the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office in the UK show some 16 million travellers headed to the country up to the end of July.

That is a rise of seven per cent compared with last year and the annual number of visitors is predicted to hit 33 million by 2012.

British tourists made up the third-largest share of those sunning themselves on the beaches of Turkey and exploring the nation's vast supply of historical and cultural sites, with only Germany and Russia providing more holiday makers.

Holidays in Turkey are now the second-most popular with people in the UK, according to recent research by GfK.

The country was praised recently by Nadine Hallak, travel expert at Cheapflights Media, who said it is as rich in history as Italy.
