Britons 'favouring Turkey holidays over Greece'

Turkey holidays are proving an increasingly popular option this year, while Greece has seen a fall in demand, according to Skyscanner.

The flight search engine revealed that enquiries relating to travel to Turkey this summer are 159 per cent higher than those for Greece.

Skyscanner cited economic problems and strikes that have occurred in Greece over the past few months as two of the reasons that have contributed to its fall in popularity.

Turkey holidays, on the other hand, have become more appealing to British consumers, partly as a result of Istanbul being named the European Capital of Culture for 2010, the company said.

Barry Smith, Skyscanner's market development director, commented: "Greece has had a lot of bad press recently and unfortunately it's coming at a time when many people are booking their summer holidays.

"News of street clashes and strikes are going to hurt Greece's tourist industry and Greece's loss is Turkey's gain."

People who opt for a Turkey villa holiday this year can choose from a number of resorts along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, such as Ortakent, Bitez and Kalkan.
