Ancient sites recommended to those taking holidays in Turkey
Those venturing off on a holiday in Turkey may want to take in Ephesus and Aphrodisias, as one travel writer has described the regions as the country's best lesser-known destinations.
Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Nick Trend noted Ephesus is a remarkable Roman and Hellenistic site that has proven popular with many day trippers from surrounding coastal resorts - who may have been attracted by the reconstructed facade of the Library of Celsus.
For holiday makers staying in a villa in Turkey who prefer a quieter spot, Aphrodisias could be right up their street, as the reporter said of the location: "More beautiful and more spectacular than Ephesus, with extensive remains and a very impressive stadium (the best-preserved and biggest of its type)."
The newspaper recently included Turkey's Bay of Kumlubuk among its top 20 destinations in 2011, observing the area boasts unspoilt beaches and a rich history, while the terrain is ideal for walking and biking.
