Take a step back in time on a south of France villa holiday

People planning south of France villa holidays over the coming months might be interested in paying a visit to Arles to see a fascinating exhibition in the city.

A display exploring some of the historical developments and events associated with the region will be on view at the Arles Museum of Antiquity until January 2nd 2011.

The exhibition offers an insight into archaeological discoveries that have been made in the Rhone river and in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer near Arles in the past 20 years.

Holiday makers staying in south of France villas can pay a visit to the museum on Rue du Cirque Romain to see a selection of nearly 500 objects.

Arguably the highlight of the entire display is a life-sized bust of Julius Caesar, which was discovered in the Rhone in 2008 and is thought to be one of the oldest depictions of the Roman ruler ever discovered.

Travellers who decide to visit Arles during a south of France villa holiday will also have the opportunity to see sights such as the church of St Trophime and the Roman amphitheatre.
