Step back in time on a Languedoc villa holiday

People planning to rent Languedoc villas for a south of France holiday this year can pay a visit to the town of Aigues-Mortes to join in with an annual tradition that is recognised every summer.

The 2010 Saint Louis Festival, which has a medieval theme every year, will take place on the weekend of August 20th to 22nd.

Arranged to mark the arrival in France of King Louis IX, also known as Saint Louis, the event features a historical re-enactment including everything from horses and riders to a medieval tavern.

People staying in Languedoc villas can head to Aigues-Mortes to enjoy medieval music and street performances and sample some mead and wine.

The festival celebrates the reign of King Louis IX in the 13th century, which was one of most successful and fruitful periods of the Middle Ages for France.

Aigues-Mortes is located in the Gard department of Languedoc-Roussillon and is famous for the well-preserved medieval walls that surround the town.

It was used as one of the settings for The Garden of Eden, a novel by Nobel Prize-winning writer Ernest Hemingway.
