South of France villas: Smartphones being used by many tourists

Brits who are preparing to fly out to south of France villas this year have been told of the number of holiday makers who now see their smartphone as an essential travel item.

Research conducted by TripAdvisor has found that out of over 1,000 US respondents, 38 per cent have opted to use their phones to prepare a journey overseas and 60 per cent have downloaded travel apps to aid their vacations.

When it comes to answering what they main use of a mobile phone is when abroad, 47 per cent said to make calls on it, the most popular answer.

However, more than half of respondents said they are no strangers to turning to their smartphones for other aids while staying in holiday villas too, such as taking and sharing photos or exploring the internet.

Mike Putnam, director of mobile product for TripAdvisor, acknowledged: "Smartphone adoption around the world is skyrocketing, and is fundamentally changing the way people get travel advice."

Those going on Greece villa holidays were recently told of the Rhodes Guide app, which could aid journeys to the destination and is available on the iPod Touch, iPad and iPhone now.
