South of France villas: Plenty to see in Auvergne

Brits planning on taking a holiday by staying in South of France villas have been encouraged to check out the region of Auvergne.

A highlight location in the area is that of Salers, which Daily Telegraph writer Harry Coen has showered with praise.

He explained that the destination is "one of the High Auvergne's most attractive towns, full of gorgeous Renaissance houses, high above the confluence of the Aspre and Maronne rivers".

When in the town, holiday makers can indulge in "chunky, satisfying and filling country food", with aligot, green lentils from Le Puy-en-Velay and a potato puree made from local cheeses being just some of the highlight dishes.

Other attractive areas to visit when booking villas in the South of France region of Auvergne include Murat, with its "bewitching medieval streets" and nearby Aurillac, which is taken over by an international street theatre festival in August.

Another event to excite tourists in the South of France is that of water jousting, which is being celebrated across Languedoc between late spring and early autumn.
