South of France villa guests urged to see local rivers

South of France villa guests can add a fun and memorable element to their trip by visiting some of the region's rivers, according to a local tourist board.

Midi-Pyrenees Tourism urged visitors to spend some time "messing about on the river", pointing out that "a completely different picture of an area can be appreciated from the water".

One option for people on south of France villa holidays is to take a cruise along the Garonne, which provides a unique way of seeing the sights of Toulouse.

Passengers can enjoy views of the old town area and look out for landmarks including the Town Hall, the Chateau d'Eau and the Capitole Square.

The Unesco-registered Canal du Midi is described by Midi-Pyrenees Tourism as "probably the most famous canal in Europe".

All sorts of leisure craft sail along the canal, including boats offering dinner cruises.

Holiday makers can also explore a 75km section of the Lot to see gorges, valleys, castles and vineyards, or sail along the Baise river, which provides access to sites such as the Cistercian abbey of Flaran, which dates back to the 12th century.
