South of France ski resort trips 'should be planned for'

Holiday makers seeking out villas in the south of France can help make sure that they do not suffer any injuries while visiting ski resorts in the region.

While pursuing activities on a ski slope is sure to be filled with fun, people could put themselves at risk if they do not prepare their body for the action.

That is why Dr Robert Dimeff, professor of orthopaedic surgery, pediatrics, and family and community medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center's orthopaedic sports medicine program, advises tourists to get in shape before arriving at a ski resort.

In particular, the expert recommends focussing on strengthening the body's core and legs, including the lower leg, abdominal and lower back muscles.

Dr Dimeff also stated: "Any exercise regimen, however, should be coordinated with your primary care physician, or a sports medicine specialist for more advanced athletes, to be sure it takes into account your health history."

In other advice for those booking up south of France villas, Dave Byrd, director of risk and regulatory affairs for National Ski Areas Association, recently pointed out that goggles should be seen as "essential ski equipment" so that a person's eyes can be protected while on the piste.
