South of France holidays 'top for bird watching'

Those who enjoy spending time in the countryside and spotting wildlife may find that a South of France holiday is perfect for them.

According to the Creme de Languedoc website, the Languedoc region is one of Europe's most diverse bird watching areas.

It claims there are four main areas to spot bird species in the French region - two in the mountains and two in the wetlands.

The Camargue and the Etangs of Narbonne - the wetland areas - will be easily accessible to those renting South of France villas in Grau D'Agde.

Famous for its pink flamingos, the former is home to large numbers of freshwater waders, while in the latter tourists can spot starlings, pelicans and cuckoo species.

Grau D'Agde itself is a quaint fishing village where holiday makers are likely to come across various seabirds.

However, it also has a lot to offer for beach lovers, as there are several long stretches of sand along the nearby coast.

The ancient town of Agde with its ramparts is also just a short drive away and could make an excellent day trip.
