South of France holidays 'offer an escape from football woe'
People hoping to take a break that will allow them to forget about the unmitigated disaster that was England's World Cup campaign should consider a south of France holiday, according to Daily Mail travel writer Chris Leadbeater.
The journalist pointed out that David Beckham had the right idea when he flew to his plush retreat in Bargemon, Provence following his country's embarrassing exit from the tournament in South Africa.
Mr Leadbeater described Bargemon as a "distinctly unshowy" village that boasts olive groves, winding lanes and historic architecture.
Like many parts of southern France, the town is more interested in rugby than football, meaning there will be few reminders of the World Cup for visitors to worry about.
Holiday makers staying in Provence villas can also pay a visit to St Raphael, which is located between Cannes and Saint-Tropez and is quieter and arguably more relaxing than both, according to the Daily Mail writer.
Those hoping to enjoy some culture and local cuisine can visit Aix-en-Provence during a south of France villa holiday, while Nimes boasts a number of fascinating historical attractions.
