Rent a Biarritz villa and enjoy 'golf a la Basque'

Those renting a Biarritz villa will be able to enjoy the Basque region's rich golfing heritage.

According to France Today, courses have been established in France since the 1850s, when they were introduced by British entrepreneurs in popular spa towns following the Napoleonic wars.

And within that tradition, the Basque region has always provided the crème de la crème of French golf, even producing the nation's only ever British Open winner, Arnaud Massy, in 1911.

Boosted by its increasing popularity among European summer holiday makers throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Biarritz has also become an important part of France's golfing heritage, boasting one of its most historic courses, Le Phare.

As well as Le Phare, France Today recommends golf lovers staying in a south of France villa check out Golf d'Hossegor, a course 20 miles outside of Biarritz that is next to the sea, or Chantaco, which is situated close to Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the Pyrenees.

Napoleon III, Queen Victoria and Edward VII are among the many royals who spent many of their summer vacations in Biarritz.
