Provence holidays offer the chance to see 'spruced up' Marseilles

Those planning Provence villa holidays in the South of France will be able to see a whole new side to Marseilles.

In an article for the Times, travel journalist Anthony Sattin said that after spending "decades in the doldrums", the city is changing fast.

He explained that Marseilles is being "spruced up" as it prepares to stand as the European Capital of Culture in 2013.

Visitors will be able to stroll around the Le Panier district and the city's old quarters or to walk along the rocky inlets along the coast.

"Walk over the thyme-strewn rocks in autumn and you'll have the path, the seagulls and the blast of untamed Mediterranean beauty to yourself," said Mr Sattin. "What better way to prepare yourself for dinner?"

Indeed, holiday makers could then sample some "fabulous" Mediterranean cooking, including some of the fresh seafood for which the South of France is famous.

Provence villas in Aix could be the perfect choice for those hoping to spend time in Marseilles as it is just a short drive away.

It is also home to its own narrow winding streets, mansions, squares and other architectural marvels.
