Provence holidays easily accessible by rail

Older people heading to a South of France villa may be tempted to travel to their destination by rail.

According to a Daily Telegraph reader, those travelling inter-city - Corail - outside peak periods are eligible for a 25 per cent discount when they present a proof of age document when booking.

With retirement comes increased freedom, and this offer may appeal to those seeking an environmentally-friendly way of getting to their South of France holiday.

All the more so because holiday makers can leave London in the morning and reach Provence by mid-afternoon, allowing travellers the rest of the day to settle in or explore.

People en route to Provence holidays will have to disembark the Eurostar at Lille before jumping on the high-speed TGV all the way to Marseille, where the train then travels at a more leisurely pace.

Provence is a particularly popular holiday destination for Brits of all ages owing to its proximity to the UK and its Mediterranean climate.

The region is also known for its rose wines, despite conditions being challenging. The hot weather and plentiful sunshine, while a selling point for holiday makers, causes grapes to ripen quickly, particularly if there is little rain.
