Picturesque scenery promised to south of France holiday makers

For anyone enjoying a South of France villa holiday this autumn, the region offers unparalleled beauty and sandy dunes.

According to one travel writer, the allure of the area is that it provides a chance to really get up close and personal with the natural world.

Writing in the Mirror, Cecile Metcalf explained that the activities she enjoyed while in the region included riding the famous white horses of Camargu.

Visiting France's biggest wetland, which extends from Arles to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhone, she also recommended a trip to see the stunning flamingos.

"There are 10,000 pairs of flamingos … that can be seen from the observation platform created in an 18th century customs house," Ms Metcalf wrote.

"The sight of so many of these bright-pink creatures together is spectacular."

People looking for more than just nature will also find plenty of culture in the south of France, hardly surprising as it is the setting that inspired many of Van Gogh's most cherished artworks.

Families who wish to explore the hidden secrets of the south of France could rent a villa in Languedoc, which is also the world's largest wine-producing area and stretches from the Pyrenees to the Camargue and the Cote d'Azur.
