Pedal through Camargue on a South of France holiday

Those hoping to explore Camargue on their South of France holiday could rent bikes and enjoy some cycling, as one travel journalist did recently.

In an article for the Age newspaper, Andrew Bain said he went cycling through "lavender-laced" Provence and the "rolling-pin-flat" Camargue region.

Beginning at the delta of the River Rhone, he travelled through the wetland areas that are known for being the only nesting site for pink flamingos in France.

He said the unusual birds streaked the sky as he cycled along towards Arles, the smell of the Mediterranean Sea permeating the air.

Elsewhere in Provence, holiday makers can cycle past sprawling vineyards and yellow fields "flecked" with poppies.

Those renting South of France villas in St Remy de Provence will be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Camargue on a cycling day trip.

They could also head further inland to take in some of the countryside views that inspired the works of Vincent Van Gogh.

As well as cycling, the area around St Remy de Provence also offers numerous opportunities for walking, while the fortified city of Avignon is easily accessible for a day out.
