New book highlights painting opportunities for those in Provence villas

A South of France villa holiday has historically been a popular choice with artists keen to take advantage of the scenery Provence has to offer.

Painters such as Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gough famously spent time in the French region painting its many colours; from its lush, fertile landscape to its deep blue skies.

Now, creative holiday makers thinking of booking Provence villas can use a new book to point their brush in the right direction, lost-in-france.com reports.

Colours of Provence, by Michel Biehn, explores the region's scenery in six colour-coded chapters, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and White, Black and Grey.

Each features a number of photographs documenting such intricacies as quaint village walls, the greens of Provencal herb gardens and wild blue lavender.

Provence's customs and culture is also described, the website says, while Biehn also details recipes for readers to try.

The Times recommends the "Provencal A-team" - Aix, Arles and Avignon as some of the region's highlights.

This is because they are towns where, according to the newspaper, where "Provence happens".

"If you haven't visited them, you haven't been to Provence at all," travel writer Anthony Peregrine said.
