Go on a 'modern-day pilgrimage' on south of France villa holidays

People planning south of France villa holidays this summer will have the opportunity to take a "modern-day pilgrimage" in the Midi-Pyrenees region.

The local tourist board encouraged visitors to see some historic towns that were once used as rest stops on a route leading to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain.

One popular location is Rocamadour, a historic hilltop town in the Lot department that is home to monuments such as the Saint-Sauveur church and the Saint-Amadour crypt, both of which are Unesco World Heritage sites.

People staying in Languedoc villas might also be interested in paying a visit to Moissac, a community founded in the seventh century.

Midi-Pyrenees Tourism states that the destination has a "peaceful and meditative atmosphere" and is home to historic sites such as the abbey of Saint-Pierre.

Lourdes is a small town of 15,000 inhabitants located at the foot of the Pyrenees that plays host to millions of visitors every year.

Travellers who visit the destination during a south of France villa holiday can take a ride on a cable car to take in panoramic views of Lourdes and the surrounding mountains.
