Enjoy history, architecture and wine of Bordeaux on south of France holiday

There are more strings to Bordeaux's bow than simply being a world leader in wine production, as those who book a villa in the south of France and head to the town will find out.

Jim Byers, travel editor at the Toronto Star, explains the ancient French resort has plenty to offer, both from a culinary point of view but also in culture, architecture and fashion.

"It's a town steeped in history, with leafy sidewalk cafes and trendy spots offering charcuterie and dozens of local cheeses. And more than a few places to taste or buy wine," he explains.

Among the highlights is undoubtedly the Monolithic Church, which stands high above Bordeaux's limestone pavements with its soaring arches and intricate carvings.

A villa in Bordeaux also offers access to the rest of the south of France, with spots such as Biarritz a potential day trip.

More people could be heading to the region than ever before, with Eurotunnel noting record-breaking numbers used the crossing between England and France this summer.
