Does Eurotunnel boom indicate rising popularity of holidays in south of France?

A record-breaking summer for Eurotunnel could be in part down to an increase in the popularity of holidays in the south of France.

The company, which operates the below-sea crossing between Folkestone and Calais, says it the number of cars boarding its services in July and August was up by 17 per cent on the same time last year.

In total, some 533,238 cars were carried on the shuttle trains that travel between England and France in 35 minutes during the two-month period.

"The intense activity through the summer shows that Le Shuttle is the perfect answer to our customers' expectations," says Eurotunnel's commercial director Jo Willacy.

Many people could use the tunnel in order to drive to their holiday spot in the south of France, with the crossing providing an alternative to flying.

James Villa Holidays offers high-quality accommodation to those using the Channel Tunnel to travel to resorts such as Biarritz, Provence and Bordeaux.
