Day trip to Ariege may be ideal for those on holiday in Provence

Those planning holidays in Provence may wish to consider visiting nearby Ariege for a day, following recent comments.

In an article for suite101.com, Justin Butcher said the area is ideal for those looking for peace and quiet with mountain views and lots of green space, which could make it perfect for walks.

The region "comes to life" in the summer and benefits from slightly cooler temperatures than the rest of the south of France, he continued.

"Almost every weekend there will be a fete with dancing, music and other entertainment for the local villagers and tourists to enjoy," Mr Butcher remarked.

Those looking for adventure can explore underground rivers and pre-historic caves, he observed, while there are also activities such as cycling, horse riding and fishing on offer in the recently-designated national park.

Other tips for holidays in the south of France came from Christopher Thompson in a letter to the Daily Telegraph, who advised others to hire a car to travel between the area's most beautiful spots.
