According to International Living magazine, the "bon vivant" - or good life - on offer in France is among the finest to be found anywhere around the globe.

The magazine rated France as the top country in terms of a multitude of factors including safety, culture and leisure.

Jackie Flynn, publisher of the magazine's quality of life index, which has selected the country as its number-one destination for the past five yeas ain a row, said: "In France, life is savoured.

"I don't think anyone will argue that France is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, where there is so much pride in all the small details."

Those keen to enjoy the finest France has to offer may wish to take a Provence holiday, where they will find stunning natural beauty and ageless historic towns all built up around the impressive River Rhone.
