Book a south of France villa holiday and see Carcassonne

Those taking a South of France holiday for a little romance with their significant others may wish to travel to Carcassonne to get the temperatures rising.

The medieval fort town was recently selected by the Irish Times as one of the top five European destinations ahead of Paris for love and romance.

Divided into two sections - the walled fort itself, and the rest of the town that has built up around it - and sprawled across the Canal du Midi, Carcassonne is one of the top attractions for visitors in Languedoc.

There is a rich history contained within its battlements and cobbled streets and at night time the town truly comes alive in spectacular fashion.

"If you're in any way interested in antiques or wine, you’ll have to be pulled out of some of the shops here," it said.

"The influences of Visigoths, Franks and Moors are never far from view as you stroll around this eminently walkable city, drinking in its other-worldliness."

Those enjoying a South of France villa holiday in the resorts of Canet and Cruzy will find Carcassonne is just a short distance away.
