People on a South of France villa holiday during May have the chance to sample some of the region's finest wines and delicacies.

The annual Roussillon Wine Fair in Provence is a free event that allows people to sample a widely celebrated range of local wines all in one place, whatsonwhen.com reports.

Known for their rich and solid flavours, Roussillon wines have become a firm favourite with connoisseurs.

The website refers to a particularly well-known "tipple" called Banyuls, a type of French port that is often served with cheese.

Food lovers are also given an opportunity to indulge in traditional French fare.

Local specialties such as Boles de Picolat, dumplings of mincemeat with spices and olives, Anchois de Collioure, anchovies, or Tourons, a cousin to nougat, are just a few delights on offer, the website reports.

The picturesque village of Roussillon boasts beautiful old buildings, superb restaurants and a number of art galleries.

Holiday makers can lose themselves in the winding narrow streets, or head out to the countryside to see red-rock cliffs and acres of woodland.
