Book a South of France holiday and visit the Palais Lascaris in Nice

Those planning South of France villa holidays on the Cote d'Azur can inject a little culture into their break with a visit to the Palais Lascaris in Nice.

Located in the city's old town, this museum was named after the Lascaris-Vintimiglias family, who built it in 1648.

In an article for the Irish Times, travel journalist Frances O'Rourke described it as "one of the most interesting, if one of the smallest, museums in a city rich with historic sights".

She said there is a slightly ghostly feel about the place, with its great stone staircase which looks down onto the courtyards below.

The first floor is home to an exhibition of music instruments, while the second floor "gives a taste of the splendour in which the Lascaris family lived". Here, tourists can see some beautiful tapestries, ceiling frescoes and portraits.

Those renting Cote d'Azur villas in La Gaude will be just 25 minutes away from Nice by car, so could spend a whole day exploring the city and its museums.

La Gaude itself has plenty of attractions for culture vultures, including the restored Chateau de la Marquis.
