Book Provence villa holiday to see Europe's largest gorges

Embarking on a Provence holiday will allow Brits to visit the biggest gorges on the continent in a region usually associated with lavender fields and rolling hills.

The Gorges du Verdon, also known as Verdon Canyons, are located in central Provence, meaning they are easily accessible from villas in the region.

Recently visited by tipsfromthetlist.com's Karen Bryan, the gorges are recommended to visitors thanks to their "stunning, rugged landscape".

"The drive through the gorges is lovely and dramatic, although you do have to be quite concentrated on some of the narrower stretches of road," Ms Bryan wrote for the website.

"There are lots of pleasant towns along the route. We especially enjoyed wandering around the stalls in the town of Riez on market day."

Ms Bryan went on to recommend the artificially-created Lac de St Croix. Located alongside the gorges, it boasts "tempting, turquoise water" that are ideal for swimmers.

A number of water sports are on offer to gorge visitors, including canoeing, kayaking and white water rafting.

Established in 1997, the Parc Naturel Regional du Verdon, which spreads over 178,000 hectares, has some 43 towns to explore.
