Bill Bailey recommends "adventure" motoring holiday in south of France

Comedian Bill Bailey unwittingly stepped into a holiday in the south of France earlier this year, which he has now described as an "adventure".

The funnyman told the Daily Telegraph he was staying on the Spanish coast when the volcanic ash cloud struck and flights across Europe were grounded.

With no way of returning to the UK by air, Bailey opted to buy a small car and drive home via France.

He is quoted by the newspaper as saying this quickly turned into an exciting exploration – and he noted stopping for food and drinks emphasised the difference between Britain and France.

"The joy of the French road trip is that when you stop at a little town, it's not for a Ginsters pasty and a can of Tizer, it's a freshly prepared crepe and a citron presse," he said.

Tourists could enjoy such an experience on a longer-term basis by booking a holiday in the south of France.

Other famous faces to have spent time in the region recently include X Factor judge Dannii Minogue, who took a family break last month.
