Appeal of Drome for those on Provence holidays

Families in South of France holiday villas may be tempted by a brief trip north to the Drome region.

Despite being a popular second-home location for British and German holiday makers, the area remains one of the lesser-known South of France holiday locations, Nick Trend writes in the Daily Telegraph.

Famous for its lavender fields, Drome features the familiar rough patchwork of vineyards that are found all over southern France, while there are large areas of woodland seemingly hemmed in by mountains.

Mr Trend said that Drome's highlights include the "peaceful, enclosed" village of La Garde Adhemar.

Two of the larger settlements, Grignan and Suze-la-Rousse, are "dominated by enormous chateaux".

"The most impressive, at Grignan, was home to Madame de Sevigne and is one of southern France's greatest Renaissance buildings," he wrote.

"The chateau at Suze-la-Rousse has a spectacular setting and a stunning inner courtyard, but is not open to the public."

Drome is named after the Drome River, with the region's inhabitants known as Dromois.

It is known for its green tourism, such as excursions and mountain biking, and is popular with cultural tourists thanks to its abundance of monuments and churches.
