'Laid-back' Marseillan a South of France holiday gem

Those enjoying South of France villa holidays in Languedoc may wish to head to the port of Marseillan, which has all the beauty of St Tropez without the crowds.

This is the view of travel journalist Ian Belcher, who said Marseillan is a "laid-back" fishing village that first attracted artists and writers in the late 19th century.

In an article for the Guardian, he claimed that unlike celebrity haunt St Tropez, Marseillan is serene and somewhat isolated, which may please those looking to experience the real South of France.

"Locals around Marseillan have turned relaxation, lubricated with decent wine and fresh seafood, into an art form," he remarked.

Located to the east of Beziers, the village is situated on the edge of a Mediterranean lagoon known as the Etang de Thau, where holiday makers can enjoy a boat trip and some wildlife spotting.

Mr Belcher pointed out that it is home to more than 700 Mediterranean species, including seahorses.

Kitesurfing and windsurfing are popular activities on the Etang de Thau, so tourists may also spot some keen water sports enthusiasts showing off their skills.

Marseillan is close to the neighbouring Languedoc fishing village of Gray D'Agde, so those hoping to spend time in the port town could rent a South of France villa here.
