He explained that the destinations had seen a spike of activity in the summer, which is expected to continue into the winter, with more and more people looking for cheap villas to rent in the destinations.

This advice comes hot on the heel of the latest ABTA 2011 Consumer Trends Survey, which revealed that Spain has topped the chart of the best holiday destinations for families.

Consumers were asked which country they regarded as the most family friendly for holidays and almost one in five gave their vote to Spain.

Ignacio Vasallo, director of the Spanish Tourist Office, welcomed the news: "We are delighted to see that even in tough times families continue to see Spain as their preferred holiday destination."
