Menorca holidays best for relaxation

While its neighbours Mallorca and Ibiza are known for their lively beach resorts, the Balearic island of Menorca is the place to go for total relaxation.

This is the view of television and radio personality Graeme Garden, who said he often rents a Menorca villa in Son Bou to enjoy a tranquil break.

In an article for the Telegraph, he said he and his wife started travelling to the island about 12 years ago and it has been his favourite destination ever since.

He insisted that Menorca is great for those who enjoy "sitting" holidays as opposed to "doing" holidays.

"Between the town and the sandy beach there's a nature reserve with lots of birds and wildlife," he said of Son Bou.

However, Mr Garden said there is also plenty for those who do want to be a little more active, claiming that the island is the biggest Neolithic site in Europe.

Holiday makers can visit ancient villages and burial mounds, as well as the La Mola fort, which was built to guard the entrance to Mahon harbour in the 19th century.

Menorca is also home to some fantastic restaurants, he added, singling out Sant Jaume in Son Bou as a particular favourite.

Those hoping to enjoy a relaxing break in the sun could rent their own Menorca villa in Son Bou, which is home to the island's longest beach.
